Loves’ Outages

Dear fleet customer:

While the Colonial Pipeline has begun running, we want to caution you to expect a slow rollout for operations to return to normal. In fact, within these initial hours of operations, not much has changed from yesterday. We are working hard to secure supply but are seeing steep price increases and long wait times at racks that have product.

The following Love’s locations are experiencing intermittent fuel interruptions. Please check loves.com/fuelupdates for more frequent fuel updates throughout the day between these emails.

Colonial Pipeline Shutdown Update

Updated May 13, 2021 at 8 am CT

Due to the Colonial Pipeline shutdown, select Love’s locations are experiencing intermittent diesel and gasoline outages. Love’s and its teams are working diligently to minimize outages to only a few hours. If extended diesel outages occur, Love’s will note which locations are affected on this page.

Because the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issued a regional emergency declaration to waive the hours-of-service (HOS) requirements for drivers hauling fuel, Love’s continues to leverage its Gemini Motor Transport fleet to increase delivery opportunities from other regions.

This webpage will be updated at 8 a.m., 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. Central.

Colonial Shutdown: All Markets to Receive Products by Midday Thursday

Thursday, May 13, 2021 | 10:04:42 AM EDT

Colonial Pipeline said early Thursday it has made “substantial progress” in restarting the largest U.S. refined product pipeline system and that product delivery has begun in most markets, and the company now expects each of the
markets it serves will receive products by midday Thursday.

A system restart update map accompanying the online statement shows that segments that are expected to be operational by midday Thursday include a portion of Colonial’s main lines near Birmingham, Alabama, Line 4 between Greensboro, North Carolina and Dorsey in Central Maryland, as well as smaller spur line near Baltimore, Maryland and Selma, North Carolina.

The Alpharetta, Georgia-based company’s latest announcement came a day after Colonial said it initiated a restart of pipeline operations around 5:00 p.m. ET Wednesday, following a six-day outage that has roiled Southeastern gasoline markets and called attention to the vulnerability of the United States’ energy infrastructure.

U.S. refined product futures dived on the latest Colonial news. At 9:34 a.m. ET, NYMEX June RBOB gasoline futures tumbled 5.30cts/gal, to $2.1080/gal on CME Globex, and June ultra-low-sulfur diesel was down 5.40cts/gal, at  $2.0155/gal.

NEWS
Colonial Pipeline restarted operations Wednesday at approximately 5 p.m. ET following days of halted operations, but the company warned that it would still take several days for the system to be fully operational. “Following this restart it will take several days for the product delivery supply chain to return to normal,” Colonial said in a statement. “Some markets served by Colonial Pipeline may experience, or continue to experience, intermittent service interruptions during the start-up period. Colonial will move as much gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel as is safely possible and will continue to do so until markets return to normal,” the company added.

The majority of the Colonial Pipeline, which operates the largest fuel transmission line from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast, has been offline since Friday. The company shut down its systems as a proactive measure after it fell victim to a ransomware attack by a criminal group known as DarkSide.

President Joe Biden said Wednesday afternoon to expect some “good news” from the company in the next 24 hours, saying the White House has been in “very close” contact with the company. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm previously said that the company would make a restart decision by the end of the day on Wednesday.

The pipeline is a critical part of U.S. petroleum infrastructure, transporting around 2.5 million barrels per day of gasoline, diesel fuel, heating oil and jet fuel. The pipeline stretches 5,500 miles and carries nearly half of the East Coast’s fuel supply. The system also provides jet fuel for airports, including in Atlanta and Baltimore.

Gas prices have moved higher in the wake of the pipeline’s shutdown, and the national average topped $3 per gallon on Wednesday for the first time since 2014. Some areas in the Southeast are also running short on fuel as consumers head to the pump, in many cases panic buying.

Dear fleet customer:

Love’s has developed an internal task force to monitor the increasing effects of the Colonial Pipeline shutdown. This is an ever-changing situation that we are maneuvering in real time to keep our stores adequately supplied with fuel. Locations in the Southeast continue to be areas of concern for fuel outages because of increased tension on supply and rising fuel demand. Currently, Love’s cannot predict how long these outages will continue. This article from CNBC gives you some direction of what to expect from the outages in the coming days.

To alleviate these concerns, Love’s continues to leverage its substantial resources to keep your drivers moving. Love’s will update you via email as new information becomes available.

Georgia Excise Tax

Love’s is in close contact with the Georgia Governor’s office regarding the executive order, which was passed May 10, 2021. The order suspends the collection of motor fuel and diesel fuel taxes required by Code Section 48-9-3. Because the racks in Georgia are running out of fuel, Love’s is hauling fuel in from bordering states. Love’s is also in discussions with those bordering states to discuss how Georgia’s tax relief will be handled. Love’s will review options for how to address this executive order.

Love’s greatly values your partnership.
