Oil prices pared losses after U.S. crude stockpiles fell sharply last week as refineries hiked output.
Futures were still under pressure after China said it would impose tariffs on a number of U.S. goods, raising the prospect of a growing trade war that could impact global growth.
Russian government comments on prospects for stepping up cooperation with OPEC to coordinate output cuts braked steeper declines.
