Being a driver isn’t just a job, it’s a part of your everyday life, and at Bennett, we understand that. In the transportation industry, when a driver moves to another company, they aren’t just making a “career” switch, they’re making a “life” switch. It’s easy for a company to tell drivers the simple reasons to make that switch. Maybe it’s home time, maybe it’s pay, or equipment, or benefits, etc. But at Bennett, we don’t just believe we’re different, we KNOW it, and we wanted to get to the bottom of why this is. What makes Bennett so special? Why do people choose to stick around as opposed to seeing if the grass is greener elsewhere?
Driver Billy Tew says Bennett has been good to him over the years. Billy was BTT’s driver of the year in 2016.
We interviewed people who work at Bennett from all walks of life, whether they’ve been with us for two months or twenty years. Three common themes continually were mentioned when we asked about the hidden treasures of Bennett – The people, the opportunities, and the pay off.
The People
When asked why they made the switch to Bennett, or why they’ve continued to stay throughout the years, the most common answer is simple: the people. When the recession hit in 2008, Billy Tew, Driver of the Year for BTT in 2016, thought all hope was lost. However, in partnership with Bennett and a lot of hard work, he turned everything around.
“Bennett has been good to me over the years. During the recession, I never went hungry. They kept me going. Mrs. Taylor and everyone there kept me going through the years and I’ve never forgotten about it. Bennett made it through the recession and they made sure everyone was taken care of. Mrs. Taylor kept me doing something in all parts of the company. They sent me everywhere, and there were things I was scared of, but once I got there it was fine. They really got me through it all. There is nothing I’ve ever asked for that I haven’t gotten. I’ve seen people come and go, and don’t get me wrong if I was going to leave, it would have been during the recession, but Bennett kept groceries on my table and they kept my lights on. They were there for me and I’ll be there for them.”
Michael Selma has been driving for 22 years and just recently made the switch to Bennett. We spoke with him recently at driver orientation and he said he could feel the warmth as soon as he walked in. He was referred by another driver, but did his own research before making the decision, and he’s glad he did. “Everyone needs to give Bennett a shot. There are good vibes here, everyone is smiling, and I feel respected.”
The Opportunities
We view our drivers as entrepreneurs, and one of our main goals is to help them continue to grow their businesses. That’s why drivers with this state of mind continue to thrive with us. As Glenn Coffey, a recruiter at Bennett put it, “Our drivers set their own pace and their own home time. They truly go where they want to go, and make the load board work for them.” Essentially, they’re seeing the world and getting paid for it. Donna Stumme, a driver for Bennett, echoed that sentiment. “I love driving for Bennett because they’ve been through it and see it all, and they learn and stay open. They’re here to help, and I count on them backing me up which is almost not known with dispatch in this industry.”
Billy Tew wanted drivers to know just how vast the opportunities are at Bennett. “There’s opportunities with Bennett that people don’t even know, and might not understand how big of a corporation it is. Many drivers don’t realize if there is another division they want to be in, they can. Mrs. Taylor has a job for just about anything you would want in the trucking field. To be honest, I didn’t realize myself how big Bennett is until I started running with the aerospace division. The opportunities were a big plus for me back then, and now they’ve gotten even bigger.”
The Pay Off
The people at Bennett take pride in what they do. Whether they are making special deliveries to the White House, heading to Texas to help Hurricane Harvey efforts with the Disaster Resource Group, or volunteering their time through corporate giving or the Taylor Family Foundation, they are continually giving back. Glenn says this is why the people of Bennett are so transparent and honest. Philanthropy has always been major part of who we are, and we believe nonprofits play an exceptional and vital role in our communities.
Noah Foulks from contract relations said he also likes to help drivers see how important they are individually. “I want these drivers to understand the equipment they are moving is essentially helping to protect our country. They’re truly making a difference. So, they aren’t just coming here to drive or work, they’re coming here to change the world.”
